"Many films that were considered to be PD turn out to be copyright and are eventually banned from the Internet Archive."
U.S. films released before 1964 had copyrights that only lasted 28 years. Most films here at the Archive are in the public domain because their copyrights were not renewed after 28 years. Those films are not just "considered" to be p.d.; they are p.d.
For example, two films from 1946.
1. The Killers
Its copyright was renewed in 1973:
R560650.
The Killers. By Universal Pictures
Company, Inc. 11 reels. (C) 21Aug46;
L514. Universal Pictures (PWH);
7Sep73; R56065O.
2. Behind Green Lights
Its copyright was not renewed.
If anyone can find a renewal for it, post it here and tell us where you found it.

This post was modified by R Pal on 2017-03-20 15:30:53 " on my earlier posting. The text of that posting was modified to clear up a misunderstanding by katieq of the original text. I did not post it to lessen the crimes of DVD rippers. I applaud any of the up-loaders here who take the time to locate, clean, restore and digitize the early films made available here.
